Narrative true crime and criminal justice reporting is as popular and varied as it has ever been—from podcasts like Serial and In the Dark, to powerful long investigations by the likes of ProPublica and The Atavist (where I was formerly the editor), to bestsellers like I'll Be Gone in the Dark and Killers of the Flower Moon. But the same stories that attract journalists with their readymade arcs and built-in emotional hooks often also present reportorial and ethical minefields. We'll talk about where and when those issues crop up—whether concerning anonymous sources, duplicitous subjects, or Hollywood options. Often the answers aren't as straightforward as they appear from afar, and we'll together examine how best to think through the fundamental questions.
